ENJOYING QUALITY FAMILY CONVERSATIONS
This weeks conversation starters, to help you kick off some quality conversations with your family.
- Where would you like to live when you are older? Why?
- What is the favourite part about yourself? What is your least favorite?
- If you could be on any TV show what would it be and why?
The goal? To help build a routine—whether it’s nightly dinners, drives to school, or even just one dedicated evening a week for “Family Conversation Night” (no screens allowed!).
You’ll be amazed at the magic that unfolds once it becomes a family habit.
RESPECTFUL BEHAVIORS AT ST ITAS
MOBILE PHONES AND PERSONAL DEVICES POLICY – PRIMARY STUDENTS
At Friday’s assembly, I spoke with our senior students about the laws and expectations regarding the appropriate use of mobile phones and personal devices while at school. This conversation followed several serious breaches of device use that have occurred recently.
To ensure clarity for our entire school community, I want to reiterate our Primary Student Use of Mobile Phones and Personal Devices Policy. This policy provides clear guidance to students, staff, and families on how personal digital devices must be managed at St Itas primary school.
Digital devices include (but are not limited to) mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, and laptops that are not part of a designated Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. This policy applies whenever students are:
- At school during school hours
- Attending any authorised school activity, such as of site workshops, excursions or camps
Mobile Phone Use for Primary School Students
The Department of Education’s and DOSCELS position is that primary-aged students are not permitted to use mobile phones or personal devices during school hours.
We acknowledge there are valid reasons a student might bring a mobile phone or device to school, such as:
- For safety while travelling to and from school
- To allow communication with parents or guardians outside of school hours
However, during school hours, including break times, students must not access or use mobile phones or other personal devices.
Device Use Procedures
- At the beginning of the school day, students must switch off or mute their device and hand it to their teacher for secure storage.
- Smartwatches must be turned off or placed in school mode throughout the school day.
- Devices will be stored securely in the classroom after collection by classroom staff.
- Students who arrive late must hand in their device upon arrival.
Non-Compliance and Consequences
If a student does not follow the policy:
- They will be asked to hand over the phone/device to a staff member. It will be stored securely in their lockable filing cabinet or in school admin office.
- If the student refuses, they will be required to attend a lunch time supervised detention with the principal.
- Persistent refusal to follow the policy will result in repeated detentions and may lead to a school suspension.
- Any use of a phone/watch/device during the school day (including recess or lunch) will result in lunch detention.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Principal
- Ensure the policy is clearly communicated and accessible to all students, staff, and families.
- Provide secure storage for student devices handed in at school.
- Regularly review the policy and enforce it consistently.
- Respond to and report inappropriate use of personal devices according to departmental and legal guidelines.
- Consider parent requests for policy exemptions on a case-by-case basis, documenting and sharing outcomes with relevant staff.
- Model appropriate device use and support families in promoting respectful digital behaviour.
School Staff
- Maintain a focused learning environment by reducing distractions from personal devices.
- Respond to non-compliance and report inappropriate use in line with policy and department guidelines.
- Securely store any devices handed in and return them appropriately.
- Model and coach safe and respectful use of digital devices.
Students
- Comply with this policy and follow staff instructions.
- If permitted to use a device due to an approved exemption, do so respectfully and responsibly.
- Do not use devices to bully, harass, humiliate or record others without consent.
- Support peers in using devices safely and appropriately.
Parents and Carers
- Support the school’s policy, including any consequences for non-compliance.
- Use formal school communication channels when contacting the school or arranging early pickups.
- Encourage children to report illness or concerns to staff directly.
- Monitor and reinforce respectful, safe, and responsible digital behaviours at home.
The appropriate use of mobile phones and personal devices policy reflects our shared responsibility in creating a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment.
The St Ita’s community thanks you for supporting its consistent implementation.
For any questions or to request an exemption, please contact the school admin on 56237222

CAR LINE DROP OFF / PICK UP AT DROUIN REC RESERVE
I've had several parents contact me in relation to school drop off and pick up at Drouin Rec Reserve.
There is now the capacity to enter the Drouin Rec Reserve and turn left to get to the schools pick up point and exit the Drouin Rec Reserve by completing a complete loop of the ground.
Could I please ask all parents using Drouin Rec Reserve for drop off and pick up to enter the ground and make a left hand turn once in the gate, driving around the back of the Drouin FC social rooms so it keeps all traffic moving in the one direction.
Parents wanting to park near the Fire Brigade building can enter the ground and veer right to park near the old building.
A reminder to all that the speed limit on all zones for drop off and pick up is 10 kph.
Thanks to all for helping to keep our school community safe and well.
HEADLICE IN OUR SCHOOL
We have had several cases of headlice reported throughout the school over the last few weeks.
For more information, please see The Royal Children's Hospital Fact Sheet.

CARLINE PICK UP AND DROP OFF EXPECTATIONS
Can I please remind all parents thet the speed limit at drop off and pick up is 10 kph. In the interest of child safety could I ask all parents to observe this safe speed when dropping and picking students up at Admin carline and Drouin Rec Reserve car line.
Also a reminder to parents that there is no right hand turn cutting in front of cars making a left hand turn into school admin drop off and pick up. The expectation id that parents drive down to the roundabout and come back up the hill to join the queue making a left hand turn into school. This eliminates traffic issues and keeps everyone safe.
DROPPING STUDENTS AT SCHOOL BEFORE 8.30AM
A reminder to all parents that the school drop off time and gate opening is at 8.30am. We have been getting a growing number of students dropped off at school between 8.00 and 8.30 am and children are unsupervised. It can also be extremely cold and wet with minimal shelter. If you need to drop your children off prior to 8.30am we recommend that you contact Camp Australia and access before school care.

PARISH NEWS
HATE YOUR MUM!
How confronting is this gospel! How uncomfortable does Jesus make us! “Hate your father, mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters and your own life!” That seems to be Jesus’ instruction to us in this gospel (Luke 14:25-33).
We’d be reluctant to sign up to such a program because, at first glance, this passage flies in the face of all we hold dear about following Jesus. Surely the whole message of the gospels is that we come to Jesus through the love which we have for one another?
Like so much else in scripture, this needs to be understood in context. Jesus is using hyperbole here, exaggeration for the sake of emphasis. And also “hate” should better be translated as “prefer”- a call to love family less than Christ. Read with this understanding we discern that though our primary allegiance should be to Jesus rather than family, our whole gospel experience teaches us that allegiance to Jesus is completely compatible with love of family (and neighbour) and of our own lives.
Some of Jesus’ followers would be confronted too being told that, far from being easy, following Jesus is going to mean giving up all our possessions and carrying our cross. So, can’t we own anything? Yes, but just as we can and should love our families, so too we can have possessions, but our primary focus must be on the Kingdom.
Whatever Jesus is asking of us here though is dramatic and existential. This isn’t a bit of tweaking to our lifestyle or fixing this bit or that bit. Jesus is a radical, counter-cultural prophet calling for undivided loyalty to himself above family loyalties and above any other distractions; for total commitment and dedication to the Kingdom of God – the only thing in the end that makes sense.
